When it comes to paddling adventures in Baja California Sur, few voices carry more wisdom and experience than Steve Hayward. “You have died and gone to heaven.”

That’s how Steve describes arriving in La Paz at sunrise, as the Sonoran desert spills into the crystal-clear waters of the Sea of Cortez. A seasoned traveler, Steve has paddled everywhere from Chile to Ireland—but Baja keeps calling him back.

“I have not missed a year yet. These days I’m there approximately six months a year… and I’m coming up on my 32nd straight year.”

Why Baja?

Steve’s love affair with Southern Baja began on a five-month road trip through mainland Mexico that ended with a ferry ride to La Paz. The region’s unique blend of marine richness and desert landscapes captivated him instantly. He’s been leading trips ever since.

“It’s an unforgettable body of water… there’s always something plopping, flopping, flipping, jumping, breaching, spouting—everywhere.”

From migrating whales to brilliant  reefs and schools of tropical fish, Baja offers world-class marine life viewing.

Where We Paddle

Paddling South offers trips all along the coast from Mulege to La Paz, including multi-day expeditions to:

  • Isla Danzante & Isla Carmen
  • Loreto to La Paz (10–12 day trips)
  • Bahia Concepción and Mulegé to Loreto

Each trip promises stunning desert coastline, marine wildlife, warm hospitality, and unforgettable hikes.

Best Practices for Planning Your Trip

  • Timing: The paddling season runs from mid-October through mid-May, with peak conditions between November and April.
  • Flights: Most guests fly into Loreto via Alaska Airlines (from LAX) or WestJet (from Canada). You can also use the CBX cross-border bridge to fly Aerocalafia out of Tijuana.
  • Trip Length: Standard itineraries are 6 days / 5 nights on the water, but custom 3–4 day or 10+ day expeditions are also available.
  • Snorkeling & Diving: Year-round! Bring a shorty wetsuit for cooler months (December–March).

“Every single time I’m underwater I see something I haven’t seen before.”

Loreto: A Pueblo Mágico

Described as a “dream to wander,” Loreto offers a charming, authentic entry point into Mexico’s marine wonderland.

“There’s no nightlife… It’s a very quiet, very small, friendly place. Great food. No hotels over three stories.”

Whether it’s your first time in Mexico or your tenth, Loreto is a gentle, welcoming place to begin.

Our Guides and Community

Steve also emphasized the warmth and integrity of the Baja communities he works with:

“They’re honest, they’re hard-working, they’re welcoming… they take care of each other, and they take care of people who come down there.”

Many of our guides have worked with us since they were teenagers and bring deep local knowledge, pride, and professionalism to every trip.
