At our launch spot, after loading our gear and food in our motorized support boats, your guides will teach you the basics of kayak safety and ecologically-friendly camping. For the first paddle day it’s off to either Isla Danzante or Isla del Carmen, both of which have excellent camps. We provide high-quality tents, but the lack of rain or bugs makes sleeping under the stars an excellent option.

After a day or two exploring the coves, bays and beaches of the islands, we'll cross back over to the shores of the peninsula.  The coastal route, with the majestic Giganta mountain range over our right shoulder offers among other attractions, longer hiking trails that reveal the inland wilderness. Your guides, who know the route well, can show you the hidden secrets of the peninsula, including many areas worth exploring by fin, foot, or paddle.

Depending on the weather for the week, and the pace of the trip, we may be ready for a rest/layover day. You can try your hand at line fishing for triggerfish, pargo, or cabrilla, which your guides will make a delicious fresh ceviche out of. Or enjoy a guided nature walk in the desert, learning about our rich local flora and fauna. There is also plenty of time for more paddling and snorkeling for those that wish to explore more…

We'll experience a beautiful rugged and dramatic drive up from the coast into and through the majestic Giganta mountain range, as we work our way back north towards Loreto. You'll have the evening in town to enjoy the soft culture of Loreto and a nice local meal, your head filled with the past week’s experiences and your heart looking forward to your next adventure.

While it’s possible that at this time of year you will encounter whales in the natural course of your week of paddling, the fact of mating season and the special excursion will make it nearly a certainty that you get to see whales during your trip. If we head over to Magdalena Bay this morning, you will be dropped off at the hotel of your choice in Loreto, and reunited with your personal luggage in the afternoon.  You'll have the evening in town to enjoy the soft culture of Loreto and a nice local meal, your head filled with the past week’s experiences and your heart looking forward to your next adventure.

The day begins with breakfast at our favorite local café. You’ll then take a van to the launch at Puerto Escondido, 16 miles south of Loreto, where you will receive a basic kayaking lesson. Afterwards, we all pack our kayaks with our personal gear, leaving the rest for the Panga, and make the three-mile crossing to Isla Danzante. We set up our first camp on the island.

The sun rising over the Sea of Cortez and casting its light on the jagged promontories of Isla Danzante is a sight to behold. Your guides will point out Los Candeleros Islands, small rocks jutting above the water that serve as a home to cormorants, boobies, and ospreys. After paddling along the coast of Isla Danzante, we make a second crossing, this time to Isla del Carmen, located northeast of Danzante. Keep an eye out for pods of dolphins during the crossing, or even a blue whale! After setting up camp on Isla del Carmen, the afternoon is yours to spend as you wish. Snorkeling, exploring the shoreline, or just relaxing and sharing stories with family or friends under the shade tarp.

After a hearty Mexican breakfast, it’s time for a day trip! We explore the coves around Isla del Carmen, and eventually make an afternoon stop at a secluded beach, which you are free to explore via hiking or snorkeling. Upon returning to camp for the night, your guides prepare a feast of yellowtail, herbed rice, mixed green salad and tortillas.

We have spent two nights on Isla del Carmen, so in the morning we’ll cross back to Isla Danzante to set up camp at a new location, this one surrounded by massive rock formations. There’s more opportunity for exploration and meditation among these rocks, and another delicious meal as the sun sinks beneath the turquoise-colored waves.

Today is our final crossing, back to the Baja Peninsula, and our final campsite. Much of this trip takes place near an area known to scientists as “The Blue Whale Triangle” due to the large numbers of blue whales sighted in the area, so keep an eye out throughout the week! Once we make it across the channel to the peninsula, you’ll have one last afternoon to explore the campsite’s rocky shoreline, dotted with enormous boulders. The snorkeling is excellent, and at night you will have the opportunity to paddle out and view bioluminescent sea creatures beneath the waves.

The sun rises over the Sea of Cortez one last time, making fiery colors briefly appear on the turquoise-hued water. Bid goodbye to this magnificent piece of the planet. We’ll have breakfast, pack up, and paddle back to Puerto Escondido for the take-out, where a van will be waiting to take us back to Loreto. Once we’ve all showered and enjoyed a final seaside lunch, it’s back to your hotel, your head filled with the past week’s experiences, your heart looking forward to your next adventure.

If you are scheduled to fly out of La Paz, we can deliver it to you at the end of the trip. At the put-in, we’ll pack our kayaks, review basic paddling and safety instruction, and hit the water toward our first camp, often making the stunning and protected beach of la Ballena.

Our first full length day of paddling will reward us with majestic views of the soaring peaks of the Sierra de la Giganta range over our right shoulder as we move south. As we move deeper into this coastal wilderness, your soul starts to rejuvenate and your muscles begin to acclimate to the rhythm of the paddling.

The Sierra Giganta mountain range can be seen in the distance for most of the trip, but as we move south they will pull away from the coast for a while. Today takes us past the historic village of Tembabiche, built above the sand dunes in the early 19th century by the De La Toba family, who financed the construction with money from a famous pearl. If conditions permit, we camp at a site from an even earlier time, with indigenous artifacts all over the area.

A short paddling day should take us to Los Dolores Ranch by mid-morning. We generally plan a one-day layover here to rest and enjoy everything this historic area has to offer.

For the layover day, you can relax by the beach and join us on whatever activities interest you. Get out the snorkeling gear and witness the Sea of Cortez’s abundant marine life, enjoy a pleasant day paddle, or explore on foot the coast and desert. Your guides know a great deal about the history behind the nearby mission ruins and the first settlers to the area, and can share how nearby natural waterways helped them survive in their desert surroundings.

Today we paddle between the mainland and the Isla San Jose, where large cliffs shoot out of the sea on either side, as agave cactus and wild fig trees struggle to grow on the sheer rock. Friends await us at Punta Alta: Doña Cuca and Don Chuy León, whose fishing family provides hospitality during a rest break. The Sierra Gigantas are back near the coast, and around our campsite is one of the most astonishing examples of the area’s geological beauty.

You’ll have spent a full week paddling along a pristine, roadless coast at this point, so the appearance of San Evaristo, a small fishing village, with its yachts and handful of buildings, may feel like a return to civilization. But once we’ve paddled several hours to the campsite, the distant lights of La Paz will be our only reminder that the outside world exists.

Rounding Punta El Mechudo, you’ll paddle by green copper-laden cliffs, camping at a beautiful cove. The deep underwater canyons and colorful gorgonian sea fans make for some of the trip’s best snorkeling sights.

We'll paddle from the Punta Mechudo area, along cliff lined shores and shallow water full of corals, as we enter the curve of La Paz Bay. It is not uncommon to see mantas, dolphins, and even whales when the bay begins to open up. Our support team meets us for the dusty drive back into civilization and a warm shower at our hotels.. You'll have some time to explore the beautiful La Paz waterfront, and then we will meet at a restaurant in the evening for an end-of-trip dinner.

Your guides can help you arrange transportation so you show up at the airport on time. If you need to leave early to make a flight, you can leave right away. If you leave later, you can take some more time to explore La Paz before saying adios.

Our trip starts on or near Conception Bay, a large inlet of water south of Mulege. There are several popular coastal campgrounds in the area. If the weather permits, we’ll cross the water and make our first camp on the more remote and unpopulated eastern edge of the bay.

Conception Bay works as a natural buffer against encroaching civilization, keeping us separated from the towns and noise that tend to develop around the federal highways. In fact, the protruding finger of land that forms the eastern coast of the bay is rugged and remote, with plenty of opportunity for exploration.

The Sea of Cortez is famous for its rich fishing grounds, and as we continue down the remote eastern coast of Baja California, you will encounter rugged artesanal fishing camps that are rarely visited. While we do catch our own fresh fish along the way, we may often trade with these locals as well for the daily catch!.

Our guides have been taking kayak trips down the coast for many years, and in that time they have built strong connections with local villages and communities. You may have the opportunity to visit a fishing village and learn about the local way of living.

As we head in a more southerly direction following the coastline, you’ll notice impressive ridges rising along the coast. The desert landscape curls into secluded canyons and intimate coves, and your guides can show you the lush oases that hide within these areas.

If the conditions and time permit, we like to include a stop at the fishing village of San Nicolas. From here you can hike to the nearby summit of Punta Púlpito, for a glimpse of the protected yacht harbor of San Basilio Bay, dotted with small islands that make for picturesque campsites.  

The rugged and remote territory we’ve been paddling through gradually gives way to expansive beaches, but there are still few signs of people or civilization. Some of the most isolated kayak trips you can take in Baja are between Mulege and Loreto.

Part of the reason for this isolation is the challenge. Along with the bay crossing on Day 1, there are several points in this expedition that may test your skills in a kayak. Fortunately, you are rewarded for your work with access to colorful, beautiful beaches that are perfect for camping.

Our last full paddle day takes us on another crossing, to nearby Isla Coronado, where we make our final camp. Created by prehistoric volcanoes, this island is surrounded by beautiful white beaches, and is close enough to Loreto that you can see its lights at night.

We paddle for Loreto in the morning, crossing back to the coast and hopefully getting to the take-out before noon. Once the equipment is loaded, it’s back to the hotel for a shower and rest, followed by a farewell dinner that night.

You have the day to yourself to explore the cobbled streets of Loreto, or to simply relax by the pool. We can arrange transportation to the airport, and the front desk will help you determine the best time.
